Betty J. Lewis

YORK Betty J. Lewis, 84, of Hellam Twp., died on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at the York Hospital. Born in Lower Windsor Twp., to her parents, the late Howard P. and Velma A. (Snyder) Smith, she was the former wife of Harold W. Lewis, who died in 1991. Betty is survived by her daughter-in-law, Nancy J. Lewis of Hellam; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Wayne H. Lewis; three brothers, Donald E., Dallas E., and Marlin S. Smith; and a sister, Lareda M. Gemmill. Betty was a self-employed beautician while her son, Wayne, was a growing up. After that, Betty worked for York Dress Corporation making suits on an assembly line, and when York Dress closed she earned her GED and worked at Community Progress Council until she retired. Betty loved to bake cakes, cookies, and candy, but she hated doing dishes!! She enjoyed playing Canasta into all hours of the night or would visit friends and play 31 for a few hours. As a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, she volunteered at the Rescue Fire Co. in Dallastown and later at the Hellam Fire Company. Betty loved jewelry and spent a lot of time on the Home Shopping Network in her younger years. She was an avid bowler and participated in state tournaments. She was a big Os fan. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at the Etzweiler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market St., York. A viewing will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Friends and relatives are requested to join the family at the Hellam Fire Hall after the service. The Rev. John W. Bell, pastor of Fairmount U.M. Church, will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be made toward the funeral expenses for Betty. www.etzweiler.com
