David R. Eitel M.D.

FACEP, MBA YORK David R. Eitel, 63, passed away peacefully at home, on Friday, October 5, 2012, in the embrace of his loving family. Dave was born on December 21, 1948, in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. Dave graduated from the University of Western Ontario Medical School in 1973. He and his wife, Lynne, moved to the United States in 1975 where he practiced medicine in Maine and New York before settling in York in 1982. Dave touched many lives during his 30-year career with York Hospital/ Wellspan Health System, first and foremost as an attending physician and faculty member in the Emergency Department. Dave also served as: a Medical Director of Medic Units; a Medical Director of the York-Adams Emergency Medical Resource Center (EMRC); a Research Director for the Department of Emergency Medicine; and the Director of ED Health Services Design. Dave developed the York Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency curriculum and was the program's first Medical Director. Most recently, he served as Physician Advisor for the Case Management Department. After graduating from the Sellinger School of Business at Loyola College in 1996, Dave became interested in health care operations research and management science (OR /MS). He was the co-inventor of Emergency Severity Index (ESI) Triage. He was passionate about "turning the lights on" for health care professionals and designed a variety of OR/MS tools, handbooks, and seminars. Dave also taught graduate level business courses at George Mason and Kent State Universities. He was a valued member of many professional associations, the author of numerous publications, and was invited to present his work both nationally and abroad. Dave was the recipient of many awards, including the first ever Pennsylvania Emergency Medical Service Physician of the Year award, and in 1994, the York Hospital Emergency Medicine Resident Research Award was commemorated in his honor. As ambitious as Dave was in his professional life, his personal life brought him the most joy. He lived with incredible curiosity, generosity, compassion, and humility. He especially enjoyed sharing good food and drink with loved ones and friends. Dave was a familiar face in the community, whether jogging around the neighborhood, on the sidelines of playing fields, or at the store. It was the everyday moments he cherished most. Dave leaves behind his wife of 38 years, Lynne, of York; daughter, Jessica of Arlington, Va.; daughter, Kristin of Austin, Texas; son, Justin of Dallastown; mother, Cecile, of St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada; brother, Wayne and wife Jeannine of St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada; sister, Bonita McCutchen and husband John of Goderich, Ontario, Canada; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Eitel. He was a beloved husband, devoted family man, and treasured friend and mentor to so many people. There will be no viewing. A memorial service to celebrate Dave's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 3, 2012, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 1502 Fourth Avenue, York, PA 17403 with the Rev. Dr. David J. Robson officiating.
