Ervin R. Generette

YORK On Sunday, February 2, 2014, in the midst of God's peace, family, and friends, Ervin Rodman Generette, 76, was escorted into Heaven by God's Holy Angels. Born July 19, 1937, in York, he was the son of the late Rev. Edward and Marie Generette. He graduated from William Penn Sr. High School Class of 1955. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army, and became a Legionaire for over 50 years at Post 794 and Post 127. The "Rev", as he was fondly known, was employed by the Columbia Gas Co. and retired from York Hospital. Ervin was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church for over 50 years and served in the male chorus for 25 years, for which he was honored. He was an excellent bartender. Ervin leaves to cherish his memory a daughter and best friend, Cheryllynn Generette Riddley (George); two sons, Marcus "Tony" Generette of York and Ervin Montez Lopez of South Carolina; six brothers, Edward (Buck) Generette and Larry Bay of York, David Hill (Jenny) of New York, Robert Jackson of Massachusetts, Roy Maxfield of Camp Hill, and Kevin White of California; a brother and loving friend, Bergie McCowin; six sisters, Myrtle Legotte of York, Mary Sims of Lancaster, and Carol Evans, Joyce Rice, Henrietta Rascoe, and Sonia Smikle, all of York; two sisters-in-law, Carla Palmer and Sharon Leonard, both of York; and a loving sister and friend, Aggie McCowin. He also leaves a son, Ernest Washington (Tori), a daughter, Danine Ausby (his children of love); nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a special friend, Bill Holland, who was a father figure to Lynn and Tony; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Woodrow, Charles, Levoyd, Greggs, Joseph, Donald, and William Baxter Generette; one sister, Eddie Mae Shine; a sister-in-law, Rachael Generette; and Lynn and Tony's mother, Gladys Generette Holland. A viewing will be on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at his church, Bethel, A.M.E., 356 W. Princess St., York, and on Monday from 9-11 a.m. American Legion Post 127 will have an Honor Guard posted during the viewings. The York County Veterans Honor Guard will be performing full military rites at 11 a.m. The Celebration of Life Service will follow with Pastor Katherine E. Rose officiating. Interment will be private. Gladfelter Funeral Home, Inc., York, is entrusted with the arrangements.
