George E. Neff

YORK George E. Neff, 88, died at 5 a.m. Friday, April 5, 2013, at his residence. He was the husband of Betty J. (Sechrist) Myers Neff, and Doris E. Neff, who died in 1987. Born November 5, 1924, in York, he was the son of the late George H. Neff, Sr. and the late Florence M. (Stagemyer) Neff. George was a retired employee of the U.S. Navy. He worked at the Naval Support Activity in Mechanicsburg and in Washington, D.C. and retired in 1985 with 36 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He was a 1943 graduate of William Penn Sr. H.S. and attended Iowa State University. George was a member of the Druck Valley United Methodist Church and served as Lay Leader and a Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of the Hawk Gunning Club, the Mechanicsburg American Legion Post #0109, and the White Rose Lodge #706 F&AM. In addition to his loving wife, Betty, George is survived by sister, Phyllis M. Strayer of Dover; three stepsisters, Flo Parlett, Kayann Renoll, and Fern Hamburger, all of Dallastown; sister-in-law, Ethel P. Sower of York; and numerous nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by a brother, Charles H. Neff, Jr. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at the Etzweiler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market St., York. A viewing will be held Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the Etzweiler Funeral Home. The Rev. John F. Allen, Pastor of Druck Valley U.M. Church, will be officiating and the Rev. Judy L. Strayer, a Chaplain of Cumberland Crossing, will assist. Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery. The York County Veterans Honor Guard will conduct full military rites at the cemetery.
