James F. Donahue

YORK James F. "Jim" Donahue, 81, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at Misericordia Convalescent Home. He was the husband of the late Pearl F. (Delaney) Donahue. A viewing will be 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, December 2, 2013, at St. Joseph Church, 2935 Kingston Road, York. The Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10 a.m. Following Mass he will be buried with military honors in Mt. Rose Cemetery. The John F. Keffer Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc., 902 Mt. Rose Ave., York, is assisting the family. Jim was born June 20, 1932, in Somerville, Mass., a son of the late Ethel L.Donahue and Edward J. Donahue, Jr. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, where he served as an usher and a member of the finance committee . Jim graduated from Boston College with a business degree and enlisted in the Marine Corps as a 1st Lieutenant. He entered the Sears management trainee program in Framingham, Mass., in 1958 and began a long and successful career with Sears, including positions in Saugus, Mass., Annapolis, Md., Bethesda, Md., Philadelphia, Pottsville, and finally, York, where he served as store manager from 1975-1989. He retired in 1989. Mr. Donahue was an active member of the York community. He served as United Way President from 1977-1978, Junior Achievement Board of Directors (1975-1986), York County Merchants Association President (1978-1980), Salvation Army Chairman (1980), Chamber of Commerce Chairman (1982), Strand Capitol Board of Directors (1982-1987), Rotary Club Vice President and President (1985-1987), Martin Memorial Library Board of Directors (1988-92), York County Industrial Development Authority Board of Directors, Vice Chairman and Chairman (1988-92), was a York County Commissioner, Vice Chairman (2001-04), where he served as President of the York County Prison Board, and many others too numerous to mention. Jim is survived by his children, Catherine Smith and her husband, Roy of Cape May, N.J., James F. Donahue, Jr. of York, Susan Smith and her husband, Ronald of Yardley, Steven Donahue and his wife, Kathleen of York, and Michael Donahue and his wife, Cheryl of Harrisburg; grandchildren, Amy Smith Anthony and her husband, Ryan, David Smith, Jenny Donahue, Christina Sheeran and her husband, Michael, Emily Smith, Lindsay Smith, Kevin Donahue, Ryan Donahue, Jack Donahue, Allison Donahue, Joshua Donahue, and Amanda Donahue; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Sara Sheeran. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his infant son, Kevin M. Donahue. Jim loved the ocean and was an avid golfer who leaves behind many golfing buddies and friends. He was a sports enthusiast and loved the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Celtics, the Baltimore Ravens, and the Orioles. Memorial contributions may be made to Misericordia Convalescent Home, 998 S.
