James L. Mohatt

YORK James L. Mohatt, 80, died Thursday, February 20, 2014, at York Hospital. He was the husband of the late Beverly J. (Spielman) Mohatt. Born in Sidney, Neb., on August 2, 1933, James was the son of the late James P. and Josephine (Lacy) Mohatt. James was educated at University of Nebraska (Kearney), University of Nebraska (Lincoln), and University of Iowa, where he received his PhD in 1971. Dr. Mohatt had a long career teaching music at York College where he was Associate Professor in the Department of Music, Art and Communication. After his retirement in 1998, Dr. Mohatt remained an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, adult education in music through OLLI and Penn State University, and, especially his musical participation with the York Symphony, the York Youth Symphony, where he served on the Board of Directors, the Spring Garden Band, and a brass band. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. Monday, February 24, 2014, at St. Mary's Church, 309 S. George St., York, with the Rev. Jonathan P. Sawicki as celebrant. Viewing will be one hour prior to Mass. Burial will be in Holy Saviour Cemetery. The John W. Keffer Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., 902 Mt. Rose Ave., York, is entrusted with arrangements. Mr. Mohatt is survived by one sister, Kathleen A. Fehringer of Chappell, Neb.; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Armstrong and Patricia Fehringer. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Church, the York Symphony Orchestra, or the James L. Mohatt Excellence in Music Education Scholarship at York College.
