STEWARTSTOWN Jay Sherman Vaught, 92, died Wednesday, January 30, 2013 in York at the home of his daughter. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 4, 2013 at Stewartstown Presbyterian Church, 14 College Ave., Stewartstown, with the Rev. Andrew G. Wirt officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the church. Interment will be in Stewartstown Presbyterian Cemetery with full military honors by the York County Veterans
Honor Guard. Jay was born May 3, 1920 in Crumpler, N.C., and raised in Ashe County, N.C., and moved to Harford County, Md. in 1929. He was the son of the late Jacob and Emma Jane (McMillan) Vaught and was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret (Kefauver) Vaught. Jay was a graduate of Stewartstown High School. He joined the Marine Corps in 1942, attended basic training at Cherry Point, N.C., technical training at Texas A&M University
, and was deployed to the South Pacific. Returning from the war in 1945, Jay worked at Crescent Industries, Superior Mold Builders/Key Plastics as a tool and die maker and a plastics production manager. Not ready for retirement, Jay worked another 23 years at Forest Hills Airpark until the age of 87. He was an avid hunter, bowler, golfer, and outdoorsman. He enjoyed big game hunting all over the world with his nephew, Bobby Martin. He belonged to the Stewart American Legion Post #455 for over 50 years as well as Benedict Meade VFW
Post #7046 VFW, both in Stewartstown and participated in the Stewartstown Lions Club for over 60 years, serving as past president. He belonged to Bon Air Country Club and was a lifelong member of Pleasant Valley Golf Club where he scored more than a few hole-in-ones and "shot his age" at 75. Finally, he was a member of the Stewartstown Presbyterian Church since the 1940's. His family extends special thanks to all of Jay's caregivers, especially his good friend, Amy Clancy, for all her love and devotion. He is survived by a son, the Rev. Richard Vaught and his wife Cathy, of Harrisonburg, Va.; a son, Dayne Vaught and his wife Starla, of Dover, Del.; a daughter, Mary King and her husband Mike, of Hanover; and a daughter, Alta Brown and her husband Tom, of York. In addition, Jay was blessed with nine grandchildren, Mara, Ashley, Jessica, Jason, Joshua, Kate, Jared, Emily, and Amanda; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Lilace Martin of Harford County, Md.; and four brothers, Clarence, Iredell "Doc", John, and Arch Vaught all of Stewartstown. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions be made to Stewartstown Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 277, Stewartstwon, PA 17363 and/or to the Stewartstown Lions Club, P.O.
