Olivene Hammer

WRIGHTSVILLE Olivene "El" Hammer, 79, died Thursday, December 6, 2012, at home. She was married 61 years to her husband, Dale L. Hammer, who survives. Born in Glade Spring, Va., she was the daughter of the late Roy and Alice Brown Thomas. She worked many years in the silk mills of Columbia, York, and Wrightsville. She was last employed by Turkey Hill Markets as a clerk. "El" served as past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Wrightsville Fire Company and enjoyed bowling and playing Bingo. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, George Bayman and his wife, Deb of Elizabethtown, Steven Hammer and his wife, Donna of Florida, Michael Hammer, Sr. and his wife, Kim of Windsor, and Jeanne, wife of Charles McCarthy of Wrightsville; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three step great-granddaughters; three great-great-grandchildren; brother, Frank Thomas of Florida; and sister, Jane Thomas of Elizabethtown. A son, Alan Hammer, granddaughter, Jackie Hake, five brothers, and two sisters preceded her in death. A graveside service will be held in the Fairview Cemetery, Wrightsville, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Leon C. Via, III officiating.
