Ray E. Kern

YORK Ray E. Kern, 86, passed away Monday, November 5, 2012, at Normandie Ridge, York. He was the husband of Phyllis R. (Gerberick) Kern with whom he celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on February 8th. Mr. Kern was born in York, on September 25, 1926, son of the late Charles F. and Mary E. (Eyster) Kern. Ray attended Central High School. He was employed as a Group Leader for the former Borg Warner, retiring after 38 years of service. He later worked for the Reliance Bus Co. as a driver for 12 years. Ray was a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in York. He was a life member of the Shiloh Fire Co. in which he served as Fire Chief for 10 years, West Manchester Farmers Sportsman Assoc., Reliance Fire Co., charter member of the 13th Ward Democratic Club, the 25 Year Club at York International and a member of the Shiloh American Legion Post 791. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Donald R. Kern and his wife, Carolyn E. of York and Jane L. Glass and her husband, Gerry L. of Dover; four grandchildren, Jill E. Kern, Julie A. Sterner, Karen L. Zeigler and her husband, Joe, Kathy A. Sterner and her husband, Brad; two great grandchildren, Matthew D. Sterner and Joseph Zeigler; a sister, Grace Walters of York; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Gunnet and two brothers, Charles W. and Philip E. Kern. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Normandie Ridge Chapel, 1700 Normandie Dr., York. Officiating will be his pastor, Beth A. Schlegel. Final resting place will be in Shiloh Cemetery. There will be a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to .
