Richard L. Shanaberger

Shanaberger YORK Richard L. Shanaberger, 82, of West Manchester Township, died Friday, March 1, 2013, at his residence. He was the husband of the late Shirley (Jones) Shanaberger. Born January 28, 1931, in Parkersburg, W.Va., a son of the late Mark E. and Sarah (Ramsey) Shanaberger, he was a graduate of William Penn High School, and a 1957 graduate of Gettysburg College. Mr. Shanaberger retired in 1991 as Regional Sales Manager for Response Graphics, beginning his career in 1958 with its parent company, Moore Business Forms. He was also a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving on the Destroyer USS Turner DD834 from 1951-1955. He was a life member of West York VFW Post #8951, and was also a member of Shiloh American Legion, and the Titanic Historical Society. He was the founder of the USS Turner Reunion Committee, serving as its Chairman until 1993, and also served as Secretary for the USS Turner Reunion Association. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan, and also enjoyed U.S. history, especially the history of WWII. Mr. Shanaberger is survived by a son, Jeffrey L. Shanaberger, and his wife Kathleen, of Plainsboro, New Jersey; a daughter, Tracy J. Arthur, and her husband Raymond, of Paradise Valley, Arizona; five grandchildren, Thomas Arthur, Michael Arthur, Ryan Shanaberger, Kerry Shanaberger, and Kenny Shanaberger; a sister, Joan DiLeo, of York; and two special friends, Nancy Koch, and William "Billy" Ziegler. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Shaull; and two brothers, Mark E. Shanaberger, Jr. and Robert Shanaberger. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 S. George St., York, with The Rev. Patrick Rooney, STS, officiating. Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Entombment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
