Dr. Stephen R. Herr

CUENCA, ECUADOR Dr. Stephen Richard Herr, 67, passed away on November 1, 2013, at his home in Cuenca, Ecuador, after a short struggle with cancer. He was the husband of Maret (Piirand) Herr. Born November 27, 1945, in York, he was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. John R. and Esther (Hart) Herr. A 1963 graduate of York Suburban High School, Steve graduated from Juniata College in 1967. After receiving an M.S. in Paleontology from University of Iowa in 1970, he moved to Tulsa, Okla. to work in the oil industry. His career took him to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. After retuning to the U.S., he acquired a Ph.D in Environmental Science from Oklahoma State University. As a professor of physical and environmental science at Oral Roberts University, he inspired and charmed students with his humor and kindness for over 20 years. In addition to his wife of 46 years, Steve is survived by three sons, Andrew (Brenda) Herr of Cincinnati, Ohio, Jeremy (Huey Fang Lim) Herr of London, England, and Timothy (Ryan) Winkler Herr of Atlanta, Ga.; three grandsons, Logan, Cyrus, and August; a sister, Helen (Leonard) Stoner of New Oxford; and brothers, John (Roberta) Herr of Williston, N.D. and David (Judith) Herr of Grand Junction, Colo. A memorial observance was held at his church, Boston Avenue United Methodist in Tulsa, Okla. on November 24, 2013. A memorial service will be held on the first anniversary of his death, November 1, 2014, in Cuenca, Ecuador.
