Frank Haven Obituary
STEWARTSTOWN Frank W. "Bud" Haven, 99, died Sunday, September 9, 2012 at his residence. He was the husband of Alice J. (King) Haven, and the late Marguerite (Rinehart) Haven. A memorial service will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday from J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 19 S. Main St., Stewartstown. Rev. Margareta M. Breden and Pastor Kenneth M. Weaver will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. There will be a Masonic Service at 6:30 p.m. by Shrewsbury Masonic Lodge #423, followed by full military honors by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Born September 2, 1913 in Hanover, he was the son of the late Frank R. and H. Mazie (Keeney) Haven. When Bud was a young man, he played the drums as students marched in and out of school each day. He was once employed as a salesman for the former Fishels Bakery in York. He had owned an appliance store in New Freedom from 1940 to 1942, prior to being drafted into the U.S. Navy, serving in WWII. He was aboard the USS Hornet, and was honored for his distinguished service. He received nine Bronze Stars and the Presidential Citation with a Bronze Star. In October of 1945, Bud opened Haven Appliance and Furniture Store in Shewsbury. He served eight years on the Shrewsbury Borough Council and 25 years on the Shrewsbury Carnival Committee. He was Charter President of the Shrewsbury Lions Club with 50 years of perfect attendance. He served on the York Bank Advisory Board, and was a member of the following organizations: Shrewsbury Lodge #423 F&AM for 64 years, Valley of Harrisburg Consistory 32nd Degree; Austin L. Grove American Legion Post #403 in Glen Rock, V.F.W. Post #7012 in New Freedom, U.S. Navy Foundation, and The Statue of Liberty Foundation. He was a life member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon and its Muscular Dystrophy Foundation and the George Washington Masonic Memorial in Alexandria, Va. Bud was on the bond committee for the Lutheran Home Auxiliary in York, and was a leader in establishing the now Barbara J. Egan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Shrewsbury. He was a member of the William Penn Society of the Masonic Home and The Friend Builder Society, both in Elizabethtown, and also a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Shrewsbury, where he served on the church council. Bud enjoyed traveling to National Parks and foreign countries, was an excellent marksman, and an avid hunter and fisherman. In addition to his wife of 28 years, he is survived by two children, Dan W. Hurley and his wife, Stephanie of Stewartstown, and Sandra L. Malys and her husband, Stephen of Pequea, Lancaster County. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Alexis N. and Austin D. Hurley.
