Dear Shumway Family,
I am saddened to hear of the loss of your father. It has been many years since I've seen any of you. Courtney was a friend of mine in middle school. I mark well the impression which she made on me in those formative years and know that it was from her parents, that her free spirit and intellect were inherited. I recall fondly the time I spent at George's farm with his loving family. My thoughts are with you.

Loren, Mark, Holly, Caroly, and Julie (whom I never met)- I am so sorry you lost of your father. He was an inspiration to me as an oceanographer-wanna-be and the days and nights I spent at your farm with all of you and skiing at Middlebury are among my most wonderful memories. Dorothy, I'm so sorry to hear of George's passing. He was an inspiration to so many. I only met you and George formally once several years ago when you invited Bill, Betsey and myself to stay over at your place. I'll never forget that visit.

george was an inspiration and encouraged me in my life to go the extra mile in my research and in the founding of the association of ohio longrifle collectors. a table partner at ohio gun collectors for years and a great regae dancer at d j profits after the show. i remember trading a pile of curly maple boards that george had for a german gun we both found at the same time-i won the coin toss-the lumber turned into a fine early ohio kass-thanks for the years of friendship and the encouragement to keep building rifles and researching-my love to the family-bill reynolds-ohio

Dear Shumway family:

Hearing of the loss of George is like having a library burn down. His knowledge of longrifles was extensive. We are grateful that he captured it in his books. Dorothy, remember how he loaned us the sleigh for our booth at Christmas at Rocky Ridge so we could make some money for KCVPS? He was a good person and very giving. We are lucky to have known him. Our deepest sympathy to all of you.

My deepest condolences to you and your family. Your entire family has always treated us fairly and that goes to show what kind of man George was. I know it has been years since I saw him but he always helped out in our school productions whenever he could. May God grant you His grace in this time of healing.

George was a dear friend of my family during the 1970's. He had many friends then and I was privileged to be one of them. I will always remember him as a kind, generous, and gentle man. George and Dorothy have maintained a relationship with my daughter Rachel all these years. We will miss him.
