George A. Shumway Jr.

JR. YORK George Alfred Shumway, Jr., 82, died Sunday, May 1, 2011, at home. He was the husband of Dorothy Thomas Shumway. He was born December 19, 1928, in New York City, to George A. Shumway and Orpha Johnson Shumway He grew up in Manhasset, N.Y. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from Middlebury College in 1950 and a Masters degree in geophysics from M.I.T. in 1951. From 1951 to 1962 he was employed as an oceanographer and marine geologist at the U.S. Navy Electronics Laboratory in San Diego, California. He received a PhD in oceanography from University of California's Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1959. In 1962 he moved with his family to York to pursue his interest in the art and history of the area. He established George Shumway Publisher to write, research, photograph, and publish information on antique long rifles and Americana. Among the books he wrote and published are The Conestoga Wagon, The York Charette. He created The Longrifle Series, which included over eight titles on the art and history of the longrifle. Dr. Shumway received the Distinguished Service Award from the Kentucky Rifle Association and the Contemporary Longrifle Association's Education Award. As a member of the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, he contributed articles for the publication Muzzle Blasts for 32 years. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania Antique Gun collectors Association as well as the NRA. In addition to his wife Dorothy, George is survived by children, Loren Shumway and wife, Sonia, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; Mark Roger Shumway of Cambridge, Mass.; Holly Montufar and husband, Flavio, of McMinnville, Ore.; Caroly Shumway of North Smithfield, R.I.; Eric Shumway and wife, Mariana of Roxbury, Mass.; Julie Shumway and husband, YiFei Zhang of York; Courtney Shumway of York; and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Judith Gay and husband, John of Cambridge, Mass.; and his first wife, Anne Shumway of Cambridge, Mass. Following cremation a gathering will be held at his Deep Run Farm, at the convenience of the family. The family wishes to thank VNA Community Services and the VNA Hospice for the care and support they have given.
