Samuel Toggas Obituary

YORK Samuel T. "Sam" Toggas, 78, died at York Hospital on February 4, 2013. He was the husband of Marilyn J. (Gillespie) Toggas, with whom he observed their 55th wedding anniversary on June 22, 2012. Born March 26, 1934, in York, he was the son of the late Thomas G. and Olga (Chantiles) Toggas. Sam formerly owned and operated the West York Pharmacy for over 50 years. He was the former president of SAE Fraternity at George Washington University where he graduated in 1958 with a degree in Pharmacology. He was the former president of the York Pharmaceutical Association and was former president of the West York Wrestling Booster Club where his passion, commitment and leadership were instrumental in helping to establish one of the most competitive wrestling programs in the area. In his retirement, Sam kept himself busy by spending time at his homes in Rehobeth, Del. and Hilton Head, S.C. He also used his vast knowledge by working at the pharmacy at Target. In addition to his wife, Sam is survived by three sons, Steven M. Toggas and wife, Candy Jo of York, David S. Toggas and wife Carolyn of Rehobeth, Del., and Thomas M. Toggas and wife Katy of Washington, D.C., eight grandchildren, Amber Jean Toggas, Tyler D. Toggas, Victoria Leigh Toggas, Colin Randol Toggas, Olivia Blair Toggas, Samuel Thomas Toggas, Cate Egan and Keeley Egan. He is also survived by a brother, John T. Toggas of Gettysburg and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, February 7, 2013, at the Etzweiler Funeral Home, 1111 E. Market St. York, with the Rev. Kristine O. Heckard, officiating. A viewing will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Cremation will take place following the service and a private family burial will be held in Mount Rose Cemetery at the convenience of the family. I just learned about Sam's passing. My husband and I both drove for Simon Photo and the pharmacy was one of the stops we made. I ewnjoyed talking to Sam and I could ask him any questions about a medication. Sam was very professional and I am sure he was a good husband and father.
