YORK Gene L. Baker, 82, died Thursday, May 1, 2014, at the York Lutheran Home at Sprenkle Drive. He was the husband of Phyllis L. (Latchaw) Baker, with whom he celebrated 61 years of marriage. A Celebration of Life Service will be private at the convenience of the family. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York, is in charge of arrangements. Born August 9, 1931, in Carroll County, Md., he was a son of the late Thomas and Katherine (Stiffler) Baker. He retired in 1991 from PA & S Small as a supervisor after 40 years of dedicated employment, where he began working as a truck driver. A United States Army Veteran of the Korean War, he was also a life member of the W. York V.F.W and a member of the Teamsters Union Local 430 and 25 Year Club at PA & S Small. He enjoyed playing golf with his wife and for several years was a member of Grandview Golf Course. In addition to his wife, Mr. Baker is survived by one son, Terry L. Baker and wife, Karen of Spring Grove; one daughter, Cathy L. Canterbury and husband, Larry of York; two grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 11 step great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four step great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Herbert Baker of Shrewsbury; one sister, Norma Brown of Shrewsbury; nieces and nephews; and his dog, Chloe.
