SHELBY, NC James "Gary" Manning, former Yorktowne Hotel chef of 45 years, died in Shelby, N.C. James "Gary" Manning transitioned to his heavenly home on Sunday, May 4, 2014. He was surrounded by his wife and daughter. He and his wife of 58 years moved to North Carolina in 2003. Gary celebrated his 82nd birthday on March 14, 2014. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Inez; three children, Maurice Manning (Stephanie) of Texas, Patricia Manning Hill of North Carolina, and Gregory Manning (Nancy) of Greenville, S.C.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Rev. Warren Manning of South Carolina; two sisters, Floyie Spells and Louiza Wray, both of North Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends; and a devoted friend, Ray Jackson of York. James was preceded in death by two brothers, Rev. Richard J. Manning and Cal Manning; and four sisters, Delilah Manning Aiken, Ruth Manning Aiken, Doris Manning, and Lillie Manning Aiken. Funeral services were held in Gaffney, S.C., on Saturday, May 14, 2014, at his home church, Mikes Creek Baptist Church.
