FREELAND, MD John M. Herbert, Sr., 87, died Thursday, August 29, 2013. He was the husband of the late Anna V. Herbert and the late Virginia L. "Renny' Herbert. Viewings will be held 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday with a Masonic memorial service at 8:30 p.m., by Charity Lodge No 134, at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at the mortuary with Arthur Mays officiating. Interment will be in Stablers Cemetery, Parkton, Md. He was born May 7, 1926, in Bentley Springs, Md., a son of the late John W. and Roberta E. (Wilson) Herbert. John owned and operated John M. Herbert Construction Company and was responsible for building many homes in the Southern York and Northern Baltimore Counties. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving in WW II aboard the USS Arcturus (AKA 1) and fought in the Battle of Okinawa on April 1, 1945. He was a lifetime member of many organziations, including; Bentley Springs United Methodist Church, Parkton, MD, New Freedom V.F.W. Post 7012, PA Builder Association, and the Handyman Association. John was also a member of the following; Parkton American Legion Post 256 in MD, Charity Lodge No 134 AF & AM, United Birthday Club, Glen Rock, PA Horse Racing Breeders Association. John had a passion for horses; he owned and raced over 20 of them. He was president for both former Trail Hunt Club, Maryland Line, MD, and 7th District Democratic Club in Parkton, MD. John was a great man, lived a good life, and loved his family and friends. He is survived by his companion of 15 years, Lillie M. Reed; two daughters, Linda J. Herbert-Zaukus and her husband, David, Shirley R. Herbert-Hilse and her husband, Russell, a son, John M. "Jay" Herbert, Jr. and his companion, Emily; three step-children, Barbara L. Felix and her husband, Keith, Ricky M. Steight and his wife, Theresa, and Don M. "Mike" Streight and his wife, Pat; three siblings, R. Lorraine Davis and Doris R. Gracey, and Samuel W. Herbert. Also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews that he dearly loved. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Drew L. McWilliams, Jr.; three brothers and three sisters. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bentley Springs United Methodist Church, 419 Bentley Rd.
