John Hopkins Obituary

SHREWSBURY John P. Hopkins, 79, died Monday, February 11, 2013, at Barbara J. Egan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Shrewsbury. He is the husband of Nancy Marie (Hedlund) Hopkins. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom, is assisting with arrangements. He was born July 22, 1933, in Highland Park, Ill., a son of the late Charles F. and Elmarie J. (Poythress) Hopkins. Mr. Hopkins was a 1960 graduate of Michigan State University. He served in the Naval Air Corps from 1951 to 1954 during the Korean War. John worked as a Safety Engineer from 1960 until his retirement in 2000. His job gave him the opportunity to travel throughout the United States. He served as vice president of the American Society of Safety Engineers and was chairman of several committees of the National Safety Council. John was a Deacon of Mason Dixon Baptist Church in New Freedom. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, David Hopkins and his wife, Wei of Lexington, Mass., and Andrew Hopkins of Bear, Del; and a daughter, Susan Van Tonningen and her husband, Scott of Bowie, Md. He is also survived by three grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Bill and George Hopkins. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorial donations to be made to Mason Dixon Baptist Church, 713 Campbell Road, New Freedom, PA 17349.
