THOMASVILLE Owen E. Shoemaker, age 85, passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2013, at home with his family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Ferne E. (Moul) Shoemaker, who passed away in 1998. Owen was born in Dover on March 7, 1928, the son of the late Floyd W. Shoemaker Sr. and Ethel V. (Ritchie) Shoemaker. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in battle. He was the owner of Owen E. Shoemaker Painting Contractor and also built homes for family and friends. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and instilled great values and work ethic to his family. He was a life member and past commander of East Berlin VFW Post #8896. He was also a member of Shiloh American Legion, West Manchester VFW, Spring Grove Lions club, where he was a past-president, Viking Athletic Assoc., East Berlin Fish and Game Assoc. and West Manchester Fish and Game Assoc. He is survived by his son, Lynn E. Shoemaker and wife Marilyn of Thomasville; his daughter, Paula Shaffer and husband Skip of Thomasville; his three grandchildren, Becky Shoemaker and her fiance' Scott Gilbert, Katie Wells and husband Joshua, Layne Shaffer and fiance Nate Weaver; and six great-grandchildren, Dallas, Owen, Wyatt, Kalli, Liam and Avery. He is also survived by his brothers, Donald Shoemaker and wife Betty, Wayne Shoemaker and wife Doris, Leonard Shoemaker and wife Janey; his sisters, Shirley Eisenhart and Connie Raber and husband Larry; his sister-in-law, Janet Shoemaker; many nieces and nephews; and his wonderful caregivers, Jody and Fran. He was predeceased by his brothers, Floyd and Dale Shoemaker; and his sisters, Hazel Stambaugh and Kay Brandt. A funeral service in celebration of his life will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Irwin-Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service PC, 175 N Main St., Spring Grove, with Rev. Judy Clark and Rev. Allen Hersh officiating. He will be laid to rest following the service next to his wife at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Abbottstown with military honors provided by the East Berlin Honor Guard. Viewings will be held on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
