SPRING GROVE Philip R. Baer, 88, passed away at home on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, with his loving family by his side. He was the loving husband of Mabel F. (Langdon) Baer. Together they shared over 68 years of marriage. Philip was born in Spring Grove, on March 18, 1926, and was the son of the late Elizabeth C. (Snyder) and Oscar E. Baer. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Hurtgen Forest in 1944 and was honorably discharged. He worked for P.H. Glatfelter Co. in Spring Grove for 43 years and retired in 1986. He was a member of the Spring Grove VFW Post #5265, the Quarter Century Club at P.H. Glatfelter, and was a longtime member of St. Peter Lischey's United Church of Christ in Spring Grove. In addition to his wife, Mabel, he is survived by his daughters, Diane Patterson and fiance, Elvin Myers, Donna Wiker and her husband, David, Deborah Smith and her husband, Jay, Rose Rice and her husband, Bryan, and Linda Hubley and her husband, Brandon, and his sons, Dennis Baer and his wife, Roxanne, and Dale Baer, all of York County; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law and sons-in-law. He was predeceased by his daughter, Darlene Patterson in 2010; his brothers, David and Morgan Baer; and his step great-granddaughter, Jazmine Cope. A funeral service in celebration of his life will be held on Monday at 12 p.m. at St. Peter Lischey's U.C.C., 5671 Lischey's Church Road, Spring Grove, with Pastor Sarah Rentzel-Jones officiating. He will be laid to rest following the service in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Viewings will be held on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Irwin-Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service Inc., 175 N Main St., Spring Grove, and on Monday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the church.
