Obituary Condolences

EAST BERLIN Richard Lee Harju Sr., 83, passed away Saturday, July 20, 2013, at home. He was born in Los Angeles, Calif., on March 31, 1930. In the same year, while only a baby, he moved with his mother Ruth Goguess Fischer to Winthrop Harbor, Ill. He graduated from Zion-Benton Township High School in 1948. He joined the U.S. Air Force and served in the Korean War from 1949 to 1953. He married the love of his life, Dorothy (Betty) Elizabeth Hoban on June 25, 1955. They built their lives in Winthrop Harbor. Richard worked as a Circuit Engineer for the Illinois Bell Telephone Company in Waukegan and then the Chicago office for 27 years. He retired from the company, moved to Northern Virginia, then to Baltimore, Md., and continued working in the same capacity for MCI in the DC Metro area. He retired in 1992 and fulfilled a life-long dream of building a cabin in the mountains of West Virginia. He was a dedicated family man, and was known to friends and family as "Papa Har". He loved to watch his kids and their friends play sports. He possessed a strong work ethic which enabled him to become successful. Those who knew Richard appreciated his sense of humor, generosity, and his willingness to lend a helping hand at any time. A huge sports fan, he cheered year-round for his beloved Chicago teams until the very end. Richard is survived by his children and their spouses; Richard L. Jr., and Donna, Bobby and Skeeter, Kathy Harju and Kenny Harju; his grandchildren and their spouse, Ryan and Allie Harju, Robby, Brady, and Alex Harju; great granddaughter Winter Harju; his brother, William (Bill) and wife, Kathy Harju; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty; and daughter-in-law, Lisa. To celebrate Richard's wonderful life, all are invited to a Memorial Service at Leesburg Community Church, Leesburg, Va., on Saturday July 27, 2013, at 1 p.m. If you wish to contribute to his memory, you may donate to Hanover Hospital Cardiac Rehab Program, Hanover PA, 17331.
