MECHANICSBURG Robert E. Rettgers, 90, of Bethany Village, Mechanicsburg, formerly of Reading, York, and most recently of Dillsburg, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2014, in the Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill. He was born July 28, 1923, in Reading, the son of the late Ithamar B. and Laura T. (Hartenstine) Rettgers. Robert is survived by his wife, Marjorie E. (Fett) Rettgers: three daughters, Sharon A. Idema of Williamsburg, Va., Jane A. Carnell of Harrisburg, and Barbara K. McFarland of Sandy, Utah; and one sister, Miriam J. Nagle of York. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Robert was preceded in death by one brother, Forrest I. Rettgers, and one sister, Joyce A. Bassham. Robert retired in 1985 from Metropolitan Edison Co. (GPU) after 38 years. His last position was as a District Manager in Dillsburg. He graduated in 1941 from Reading High School and from Penn State Extension School in 1954, where he studied Industrial Electricity. Robert served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII and served on board the U.S.S. Helena, U.S.S. Saufley, and the U.S.S. Boston. Robert was a member of Masonic Lodge #549 in Reading; Harrisburg Consistory; Dillsburg Lions Club, where he served as past President and Secretary; Navy League; past Chairman of the Dillsburg Sewer and Water Authority; Monaghan Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder; Life Member of the South Mountain V.F.W., Post #6771, Dillsburg; and past President of Metropolitan Edison Employees Assoc. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at 1 p.m. in the Monaghan Presbyterian Church, 1185 Gettysburg Pike, Dillsburg.
