YORK Robert F. Les, 89, died Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at Normandie Ridge. He was the loving husband of Helen Les. They celebrated 51 years of marriage on March 28, 2013. Bob was born April 21, 1923, in Detroit, Mich. He was the third child of Frank and Pauline (Wojcieszak) Les. He was a graduate of Cass Polytechnic High School and a 1951 Summa cum laude graduate of the University of Detroit. In 1954, he graduated from the University of Michigan where he was a member of Pi Tau Sigma Honor Society. He was a mechanical/nuclear engineer. Bob's career in the nuclear field began at the Westinghouse Atomic Laboratory in Pittsburgh where he was part of an engineering team responsible for designing and installing nuclear reactor cores. In 1964, Bob was assigned to an engineering team at AMF in York for the installation of their bomb line. While there, he was the leader of the first industry-sponsored Explorer Scouts. He retired from AMF (Tyco) in Harrisburg in 1980. Bob was a Purple Heart U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was a long-time active member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church where he had served as church historian. Bob was a faithful member of Our Daily Bread committee. Bob's interests were his family and home. He was an avid reader and a collector of music. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and spending time with his pets. He is survived by his wife, Helen; his son, John E. Les, Sr. and his wife, Kara of Ephrata; and his grandson, John E. Les, Jr. of West Palm Beach, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Ruth Huff; and his sister, Evelyn Ellis. Following cremation a memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 12, 2013, at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 311 Haines Road, York. Officiating will be his pastor, the Rev. Dr. Gregory Seckman. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. A visitation will be immediately following the service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 311 Haines Road, York, PA 17402. The Etzweiler Funeral Home and Cremation Service of York is in charge of arrangements.
