Robert R. Karow Obituary
YORK Robert Reay Karow, 86, entered into rest Monday July 28, 2014, at his home. The service will be held at a later date-details will be published. The John W. Keffer Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc. East York is assisting the family. "He served his country with honor, loved his family with all his heart, and brought laughter and happiness to his friends." Mr. Karow was born December 7, 1927 in Chicago, the only son of the late Norman R. and Margretta Elizabeth (Skinner) Karow. He was also the stepson of the late Martha Wildhagen Karow. An avid collector of antiques and collectibles, Mr. Karow was a long time member of the Antique Wireless Association (Radios), the Antique Fan Collectors Association, and the Toaster Collectors Association. He was also a regular participant in the Toaster Collectors annual gathering, Octoasterfest, despite dreadful puns and frequent teasing from his relentless children. He was a fixture at many local auctions and looked forward to reserving his seat at Toomey's Sunday night preview for Monday's auctions. He could be seen at virtually every Toomey's auction sporting his trademark hair hat. He was also a passionate car aficionado, having owned his first car a model A when he was 14. Tackling challenging automotive repair projects was a form of relaxation that often kept him busy into the wee hours. He owned over 360 cars during his long life and greatly enjoyed the process of negotiating with car salespeople as a painless way (for him!) to stay sharp for his day job. In his career, Mr. Karow was a Contracts and Procurement Manager retired from Precision Components Corporation in 1990, specializing in government contracting for projects ranging as broadly as fuel cells for the Apollo aerospace program, nuclear components for the U.S. Navy, and satellite and missile guidance and tracking systems. His role required an understanding of the full technical requirements of the project, a thorough understanding of complex governmental purchasing regulations, and superb negotiating skills. He was considered by his colleagues to be an expert in his field. Mr. Karow served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1952 to 1954 and ended active duty having earned the rank of Corporal. He served as a civilian contractor stationed on Eniwetok in the South Pacific immediately following his military service and assisted testing efforts on the hydrogen bomb with the US military. Robert Karow was a member of the American Nuclear Society. He was a 1945 graduate of Maine Township High School in Park Ridge, Illinois, and a graduate of Carthage College, Carthage, Illinois. Mr. Karow is survived by his stepsister Barbara Wildhagen Mozely and her husband Frank Mozely (Leawood, Kansas); children Gretta Karow Goodis (York PA), and William R. Karow and his wife Alyson Snyder Karow (Tampa FL); grandchildren Sarah J. Goodis-Orenstein and her husband Max Orenstein (Brooklyn NY), Robert D. Goodis (Silver Spring MD), Chase R. Karow, and Graham R. Karow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Robert's name to the Cancer Patient Help Fund 25 Monument Rd. Suite 194, York, PA 17403.
