YORK Roger L. Bartels, 86, died at his residence on Wednesday, February 5, 2014. He was the husband of Elizabeth Henderson Bartels, and Helen F. (Wentzler) Bartels, who died in 1994. Born June 24, 1927, in York, he was the son of the late Horace and Laura Bartels. Roger served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, attended Penn State University, and returned to York to begin his 60+ year career in real estate. He owned Bartels Real Estate and was a certified Appraiser. Roger has been an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church, the White Rose Sertoma Club, and taught real estate courses at the York Campus of Penn State University. He enjoyed tailgating at the Penn State football games and his Thursday night Investment Club. In addition to his wife, Roger is survived by a son, Mark W. Bartels of York; a daughter, Deborah L. Bartels Lake of Indialantic, Fla.; a stepson, Robert L. Henderson of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two brothers, Glenn Bartels of York and Merle Bartels of Athens, Tenn.; and a sister, Charlene Kelley of York. He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Adrienne Henderson; two sisters, Jeanne Knaper and Ruth Paul; and a brother, Jack Bartels. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, along with three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He will be missed by all. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 11 N. Richland Ave., York, with his pastor, the Rev. Dr. Michael Koplitz, officiating. (Note: church is at corner of N. Richland Ave. and W. Market St.) In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church, 11 N.
