Fitzpatrick, Jr. GRASONVILLE, MD Thomas Joseph Fitzpatrick, Jr. succumbed to complications from back surgery at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Md., on May 3, 2013. Born in 1937 in Dayton, Ohio, only son of the late Thomas J. and Lois M Fitzpatrick, he is survived by his wife, Joyce of Grasonville, Md.; sister, Margaret Leach of Boise, Idaho; and his three children, Tom III of Grasonville, Md., Mary Kathleen Weaver of York, and Michael Kevin of Falls Church, Va.. Tom met his wife, Joyce Bergdoll, while in the 10th grade at William Penn Sr. High School. Commissioned as a Naval officer upon graduation from Penn State in 1959 as LtJG, he was assigned to the U.S.S. Sarsfield in Key West, Fla. He was married to Joyce at St Paul's Lutheran Church in 1960. Honorably discharged from the Navy in 1963, Tom earned his MBA from GW University while a management intern with the U.S. Information Agency in Washington, D.C. Upon transfer to the Department of State, he began a Foreign Service career, serving overseas from 1970-1993 as Embassy Administrative Counselor in Yugoslavia, Mexico, Venezuela, Spain, and Brazil, ultimately reaching the rank of Minister Counselor for Management Affairs during a second tour in Mexico City. Tom retired from the Senior Foreign Service in 1997 and moved to the Chesapeake Bay with Joyce in 2000. In retirement, Tom loved armchair sports, avidly following Penn State and Washington area teams, as well as golf and tennis. He and Joyce hosted many St. Patrick's Day celebrations, both overseas and through their retirement, drawing friends from far and wide. His Irish wit and perspective was legendary. To the end Tom maintained a strong will to survive. He possessed great strength of character, high personal and moral standards, and a strong commitment to family.
