YORK Barbara S. Maxwell, 85, formerly of Webster, N.Y., died Monday, December 24, 2012, at Rest Haven Nursing Home. She was the wife of Richard S. Maxwell, with whom she shared their 63rd wedding anniversary on June 29, 2012. Barbara was born February 19, 1927, in Ilion, N.Y., a daughter of the late Carleton D. and Luella (Roberts) Schwartz. She was a 1945 graduate of Ilion High School and a 1949 graduate of Syracuse University with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts. She was a member of both Alpha Delta Pi and of Sigma Chi Alpha, art education honorary. Settling in Pompey, N.Y., with her husband, Richard, Barbara began her teaching career in the Manlius, New York School District, and later the Fayetteville-Manlius School District. She retired from the Chittenango Central School District in 1986. In 1999 she and her husband moved to Webster, N.Y. Barbara was a member of the Manlius Monday Evening Club, the Fayetteville-Owahgena Chapter of D.A.R., and the Mohawk Valley Chapter of Colonial Dames, 17th Century. She was active with the Manlius Methodist Church and later, the West Webster Methodist Church. She sang with the Dewitt Choraliers and the Webster Senior Chorus. Barbara was also a volunteer for F.I.S.H. and served on the Manlius Beautification Committee. She was a member of the National Audubon Society and a life member of N.Y.S.R.T.A. In addition to her husband, Richard, Barbara leaves three sons, Richard S. Maxwell, II and his wife, Helen of Stewartstown, Carleton S. Maxwell and his wife, Susan of York, and Bradley T. Maxwell and his wife, Holly of Penfield, N.Y.; eight grandchildren, James, Kimberly, Christina, Phillip, Christopher, Kelly, Kyle, and Kollin; and six great-grandchildren, Austin Michael, Matthew, Lorelai, Amanda, and Joseph. A celebration of Barbara's life will be announced at a future date. The J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc. of Stewartstown, has been entrusted with arrangements.
