YORK Darwin M. "Doc" Gruver, 88, died Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Mary Elizabeth "M.E." Van Dyke Gruver of York and the late Ruth Frank Gruver. Mr. and Mrs. Gruver celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on April 24, 2012. Born September 5, 1924 in York, he was the son of the late Edgar and Bessie (Morrison) Gruver. Doc retired in 1987 after 30 years with The York Bank, now M&T Bank, where he was manager of the Collection Department. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during WWII with the Field Artillery. Doc was a 1942 graduate of William Penn High School. He was a member of Advent Lutheran Church and the Leisure Group of the church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, James Gruver and his wife, Julia; a daughter, Virginia Rowe and her husband, Terry; four granddaughters, Rebecca, Jennifer, Melissa, and Jessica; several great-grandchildren; a niece, Dr. Patricia Schmidt; a stepson, Richard Van Dyke; two stepdaughters, Gretchen Sipes and her husband, William and Mary Ann Vance and her husband, George; two step grandsons, Ryan Vance and his wife, Anne and Michael Sipes; four step grandchildren, Heather Roe and her husband, Chris, Erin Racchini and her husband, Tony, Elisabeth Van Dyke, and Emily Van Dyke; and four step great-grandchildren, Riley, Michael, Colton, and Natalie. Doc was preceded in death by his sister, Hilda Schmidt and her husband, Wesley; and a nephew, Michael Schmidt. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held Monday, December 10, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Advent Lutheran Church, 1775 E. Market St., York, with his pastors, the Rev. Brenda M. Ritterpusch and the Rev. David L. Ritterpusch, officiating. A visitation will be held Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. in Owens Hall of the church.
