LEBANON After many years of anticipation, on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, Edward Theodore Tietje, Jr. rested in God's loving embrace. Recently transferred to the Hospice Unit at the Lebanon, Pennsylvania VA Hospital, Ed received quality care from their staff, as well as previously from Home and Community Hospice. The family is grateful for the loving in-home personal care Edward received from Mr. Scott Fourhman and Mr. Mark Greiner. Born in Riverside, N.Y. (adjacent to Corning, N.Y.) on May 13, 1926, Edward was the son of the late Dora A. (Snyder) and Edward T. Tietje, Sr. He attended local schools and graduated from Northside High School in the Class of 1947, after having served two years in the U.S. Navy. While on active duty, Ed witnessed firsthand the horrors of war as he watched a nearby ship struck and destroyed by a Japanese kamikaze. Following his graduation, Ed began a 36-year employment career with the Ingersoll-Rand Corporation, primarily working in their Painted Post, N.Y. air compressor division. Over the years, Ed held many positions including operating a metal lathe, performing time study, working in plant engineering and finally serving as a government contract administrator. Throughout his life, Edward's faith was expressed through his active participation in the Erwin Valley Christian and Missionary Alliance Church (Gang Mills, N.Y.), the North Baptist Church (Corning, N.Y.), the First Baptist Church (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) and most recently at St. John's United Church of Christ (Red Lion, Pa). In addition to serving as a Sunday School teacher, elder and deacon, Ed also served on several of the church's governing boards. A firm believer in the Bible, Ed was very active in the Lehigh Acres, FL Camp of the Gideons International, which still seeks to place the Bible in hotels and motels, as well as offering the scriptures in many other institutional settings. Married to Bertha Anne Travis on March 28, 1948, together they remodeled a country farmhouse in Campbell, NY in which they lived for over 53 years. In 2001 they ceased being snowbirds and enjoyed living year round in their Lehigh Acres, FL home. For the last year and a half they have made their home in Red Lion, PA with their son David. Edward is survived by his wife, Anne; a daughter, Suzanne M. Hatatah (and former spouse Medhat "Mike" Hatatah) of Sarasota, Fla.; a son, Edward T. Tietje III and his wife Robin of Campbell, N.Y., and a son, David D. Tietje and his partner Mark Greiner of Red Lion, Pa. Ed was thrilled to be blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including his son Edward and daughter-in-law Robin's family: Aaron (Julie) Tietje (children, Emma and Elijah), Amber (Caleb) Cook (son, Gideon), Autumn (Krys) Sullivan (son, Levi), Caleb (Ashley) Tietje (son, Noah), and also Joyanna, Jacob, Joshua, Abigail, Molly, Samuel, and Joseph Tietje. Additionally, Ed took joy in his grandchildren born to his son David and former spouse Donna Dreyer: Adam (Meegan) Tietje, Leah (Brian) Tietje-Davis and Hannah Tietje. Edward was predeceased by his sister, Ruth Tilton. In addition to his immediate family, Ed is survived by his brother-in-law, Amos Tilton of Sycamore, Ill.; sister, Kay (Rev. Bruce) Harrison of Cincinnati, Ohio; and sister, Jane (Don) Sturdevent of Johnson City, N.Y.; as well as a cousin, Dorothy (Richard) Cornell of Bath, N.Y. Edward's funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2014 in the sanctuary of St. John's United Church of Christ, 161 N. Main St., Red Lion, PA. A visitation will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service in the church's Sunday School Auditorium. For those wishing to remember Ed, please direct your memorial tribute to The Gideons International, Lehigh Acres, FL Camp, c/o Donald Espiritu, 2205 Gardenia Way, Lehigh Acres, FL 33936. www.BurgFuneralHome.com
