OCEANSIDE, CA George Clayton Schrum, 94, formerly of Spring Grove, passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at his home in Oceanside. He was the loving husband of Dorothy A. (Bair) Schrum. Together they shared over 70 years of marriage. He was born on April 3, 1920, in Spring Grove, and was the son of the late George F. and Nancy (Miller) Schrum. He graduated from Spring Grove High School class of 1938 and has lived in Oceanside, Calif., since September 1960. Mr. Schrum served in the United States Marine Corps from October 1939 to July 1947 and from October 1948 to September 1960. He worked at the U.S. Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton from November 1960 to August 1977 as a civil service Pastry Baker and Dessert Chef. He was also a 60 year member of the Free and Accepted Masons. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, one brother, Allen Schrum, and one sister, Alice Bortner, all of Spring Grove; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by son, George A. Schrum, in 2006; his sisters, Betty Myers and Helen Cherrill Delaney; and his brothers, Harry, Clair, and Harvey Schrum. A funeral service in celebration of his life will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Irwin-Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service Inc., 175 N Main St., Spring Grove, with the Rev. Larry McConnell officiating. He will be laid to rest following the service at Spring Grove Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
