YORK Harry "Hap" Platts, 82, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2013, at York Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Joyce E. (Heindel) Platts, his wife of 50 years. Mr. Platts was born February 20, 1931, in York. He was the son of the late G. Robert and Sallie (Eaton) Platts. Harry graduated from York High in 1949 and received his B.S. in Education from Millersville University in 1958. He obtained his Masters Degree in Education from Temple University in 1968 and his Principal Certfication in 1971 from the University of Western Maryland. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Air Force. Harry retired from the Dover Area School District after 35 years of service, where he was a teacher, assistant principal, and elementary school principal. His love for teaching reached beyond the classroom and he enjoyed coaching the Dover junior varsity boys and junior highgirls basketball teams. Following his retirement he remained in the education field by supervising student teachers for York College. Harry was a 50 year member of St. John's Blymire's U.C.C. in Dallastown, the Pennsylvania State Education Association, the Dallastown American Legion, and the Hawk's Club. In addition to his wife, Harry is survived by his son, Scott S. Platts of York; his daughter, Susan E. Rivera of Riverview, Fla.; three grandchildren, Ashley Johnson, Jennifer Rivera, and Ricky Rivera, all of Riverview, Fla.; and three great-grandchildren, Brianna, Gavin, and Trinity. Harry is also survived by his brother, Stewart Platts, and sister, Helen Andrews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, John Platts, Russell Platts, and S. Robert Platts; and four sisters, Marguerite Sprenkle, Mildred Bakos, Grace Council, and Geraldine Platts. A memorial service to honor Harry's life will be held at noon Friday, December 6, at St. John's Blymire's United Church of Christ, 1009 Blymire's Road, Dallastown, PA 17313. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 11 a.m. until the start of the service. Interment to follow in the church cemetery with military honors provided by the Dallastown American Legion Post 605. The Austin H. Eberly Funeral Home, Inc., Dallastown, is in charge of arrangements.
