Jack H. Barton Esq. Obituary
YORK Jack H. Barton, Esq. passed away on November 5, 2012, at Manor Care Health Services North. He was 89 years of age. Jack was born in York on July 23, 1923, a son of the late Roy and Maggie (Majewski) Barton. He was married to Gertraude (Blum) Barton for 49 1/2 years and was the loving father of six children: Nancy Phillips, Suzan Barton, Brian Barton, Cindy Waltemire (deceased), Jane Barton (deceased) and Christina Barton-Wasilko. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Christopher, Colin, Daniel, Hillary, Seth, William, Adam, Nicolas; one great-grandchild, Logan; and a sister, Joyce Mummert. Jack was previously married to Anne (Ziegler) Barton who passed away in 1961. Jack was also preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Cramer and a brother, Frederick Barton. He graduated from William Penn Senior High School in 1941. While attending York Junior College (now York College) he was drafted into the U.S. Army from 1943 through 1945. He served in North Africa and Europe. After World War II, he completed his undergraduate degree at Dickinson College in 1950, and graduated from Dickinson School of Law in 1953. Jack was admitted to the bar and started his own law firm in 1954. He practiced law in York for over 50 years and was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. Jack Barton served the community in many ways. He was a member of the York City Council, the Chief Public Defender, York County Solicitor, Recorder of Deeds and a Magisterial District Judge for 14 years. He was the driving force behind the construction of the Memorial Ice Rink in York. Jack also served on the board of the former York County Kidney Foundation and was a member of Shiloh American Legion Post #791. Jack was a life-long member of the Union Evangelical Lutheran Church of York where he served on the church council. The family would like to thank the staff of Manor Care North and Hospice for their kind and compassionate care of Jack. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, November 16, 2012 at Union Lutheran Church 408 W. Market St., York, with his pastor, the Rev. Judith McKee officiating. Burial will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease at CMTA, P.O. Box 105 Glenolden, PA 19036 or to : York County SPCA, 3159 Susquehanna Trail North, York, PA 17406. The Etzweiler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market St., York, is in charge of arrangements.
