AMELIA ISLAND, FL Mr. James William "Bill" Sterenberg, Jr., 72, passed away on Sunday morning, December 9, 2012, at his residence. Born in Chicago, Ill., he was the oldest of two sons, born to the late James William and Dorothy Jane Francia Sterenberg Sr. As a youngster, his father's career moved the family to Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Darien, Conn. Mr. Sterenberg was a graduate of Darien High School, Class of 1958. After high school he attended Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., where he earned a Bachelor Degree in Math. Mr. Sterenberg then served in the United States Air Force before attending graduate school. After being honorably discharged he attended and graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Master's Degree in Business Administration. As a young graduate he began working in sales with the J.E. Baker Refractory Company of York. Over the ensuing years he grew to become Vice President of Sales and later became a partner in an employee buyout of the company. As a partner in the new J. Baker Refractories, he continued to provide leadership through various roles until retiring in 1998. At the time of his retirement, he and his wife moved from York, to Savannah, Ga.; before moving to Amelia Island in 2000. After moving to Amelia Island, Mr. and Mrs. Sterenberg became members of the Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Sterenberg's family recalls his love of Golf, devotion to his family and adoration for his grandchildren. He leaves behind, his wife, Patricia "Pat" Sterenberg, children, Amy Ward Thompson (Derek), San Francisco, Calif., James "Jamie" W. Sterenberg, III (Amy Jean), Monkton, Md., Robbie Blatchford (Daniel), Matthews, N.C., Steven Smith (Jenni), Fernandina Beach, Fla., his brother, Peter Sterenberg, Streetsboro, Ohio, his ten grandchildren, Jane, Julia, Will, Logan, Gavin, Sean, Ellie, Grace, Sarah, Jacob and two nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, at the Memorial United Methodist Church of Fernandina Beach, Fla., with Dr. Brett Opalinski, officiating. Mr. Sterenberg's family will receive friends following the service in Maxwell Hall, at the church.
