GLEN ROCK Janice O. (Boyle) Smith, 100, of the Barbara J. Egan Nursing Center, Shrewsbury, who was formerly of Glen Rock, died Saturday, February 23, 2013 at the home. She was the wife of the late Bruce C. Smith. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, 47 Hanover St., Glen Rock with her pastor the Rev. Ed Robbins, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. The Geiple Funeral Home, Inc., 53 Main St., Glen Rock, is in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Smith was born on June 11, 1912, in Harford County Maryland, a daughter of the late Herbert R. and Sadie (Allison) Boyle. She was a 1931 graduate of West York High School. From 1995 until she was 97 in 2009, Mrs. Smith loved volunteering at Friendship Elementary School, helping first graders with reading, by having students read aloud to her and other senior citizen volunteers. She was the oldest member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she sang on the choir for 65 years, taught Sunday School, and was a member of The Samaritans sewing group at the church. She was also a charter member and past President of the Women's Club of Glen Rock and served as Secretary of the Site Committee for the South Central York Co. Senior Center, when it was formed in 1976, and had also worked in the kitchen and delivered Meals on Wheels for the Center. She had also been active as a Den Mother and Leader in Boy Scouts and assisted with the Girl Scouts in Glen Rock for many years. She was a resident of Senior Commons for two years prior to moving to the Shrewsbury Lutheran Home this past Feb. 1st. Janice leaves two sons, Terence B. Smith and his wife Mildred of Glen Rock, Timothy B. Smith of Fort Worth TX, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Carlton B. "Chief" Smith. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, 47 Hanover St., Glen Rock, PA 17327.
