Jeanne Recht Obituary

OCT 19, 1919-JAN 26, 2013 Dear God, Please welcome Jeanne Recht with your tender mercies. I think she might need a hug. She is a complicated woman, Lord. Adventure is her middle name. She would have us ride a mattress down the staircase for fun. Again and again. She'd awaken us in the middle of the night with a whisper in our ear, "Wake up. We're going to New York." Then she would load all five of us kids in a two-seater Jag to make the four-hour drive from Dover, PA, to NYC. She never knew what the next day held. Spontaneous. Funny. Bright. Curious. Athletic yet clumsy. A devout Southern Baptist who would dance the night away. A very accomplished organist who played songs from memory in our living roomthey would ring across the mountainside. A high school graduate who could listen to a medical lecture and explain it to us in detail that night. A seamstress who would start a dress late at night, without a pattern, and wear it to a wedding the next day. Multi-faceted. Talented. And complicated. She loved to drive and drove right up until her stroke. Her favorite activity was "getting lost." She would choose a road she had never been down and keep making turns to see where she'd end up. Sometimes she would drive for days. Alone. We never knew what Mom was driving from or driving towards. She liked to present herself as a different person depending on the crowd she was meeting. Cards would come from people none of us had ever met. And the secrets of her trips were her own. She is a complicated woman, Lord. Please receive her and keep her. Jeanne, of Newville, PA, was born Elda Jeanne Hogue in Harrisburg, PA, on October 19, 1919. She graduated from Altoona High School. She married John M. Recht, MD, on June 25, 1944, and was married for 28 years. She never remarried. She is survived by children Joan Wolf (Tom) of Carlisle, PA; John, Jr. (Amy) of Camano Island, WA; Jane of CT; James of CT; and Jan Stogsdill (Mark) of Shalimar, FL; four grandchildren: Thom, Sarah, Emma, and Jean-Paul; and 2 great grandchildren: Zach and Alex; as well as a great number of loving nieces and nephews-with the exception of the one who kept Mom's post-stroke condition a secret for the last 10 days of her life, stealing any opportunity for her to be with her loved ones. I hope the contents of her apartment and bank accounts are reward enough-for there is simply nothing more to be taken from us. Since we did not get to say goodbye to you before you set out on your last road trip: Bon voyage, Mom, Aunt Jeanne, Grandma, and Great Grandma. Bon Voyage.

I came across Jeanne's obit serendipitously and, after 50 years, recognized her face immediately. I stayed briefly with Jeanne, Jane, and Jan when I had nowhere to go during a separation/divorce. They were kind enough to take me in, dog and all, and I've never forgotten Jeanne's welcoming manner and kind, joyful smile. I loved reading some of the story of her life here...what a beautiful soul! Sending wishes for healing and comforting memories to her family.

My condolences to Joan,Jack,Jane,Jamie & Jan. Your mother was always a sweetie to me and didn't seem to mind having extra kids hanging out at her house. Your house was my refuge from a big family for awhile (10 siblings). Jan you did a super job on writing this obit. Jane thanks for being my good friend and getting me through that year in bed and catching me up on everything that happened each day at school. Your mom & dad produced some awesome kids. Thanks Jeanne and Dad!

Please accept my condolences to all of you who loved her. I'm sure I am one of your mom's secret pals. I met Jeanne in a healthfood store where we all knew her as the ginger candy lady. What a fascinating and intellegent lady, I knew this even before I read her obit. Please know she impacted many who met her in a charming and delightful manner and will be missed by us all.

Dear Jeanne Hogue Recht,
Your beautifully written obituary should be cut out and hung on the wall and read daily. You lived life to the fullest. You obviously inspired many - even those of us who have only met you through this small write up in the paper - after your passing. I only hope you are able to ride that mattress down that stairway to heaven - shouting a loud "YAHOOOO!" all the way down until those tired angels carry you back up to the top saying, "What have we gotten ourselves into?" I do wish I had known you. My sympathies to your family. May your delightful spirit live on in each of them.

I think all of us should be a little complicated like your Mother. I truly wish I would have known her. What a breath of fresh air she must have been. May God bless you all...you had the best part of her.

Only a remarkable woman could inspire such a remarkable obituary. It conveys her LIFE, not her accomplishments -- there is a difference. Thank you for sharing your mother's life with us, that we may be motivated to truly LIVE, as she did.

Thank you for taking the time to write and share your thoughts. Apparently, my mother can make friends as easily in death as she did in life. I'm glad I could capture some of her and share her with you.

I don't know you but applaud you for writing the story you did, we never know what adventures others walk thru, good or bad, and bravo for you for the ending, money doesn't buy happiness, and that person will answer, just keep close all your memories

Please accept our deepest sympathy from the Spinelli Family across the road. Joan, Jack, Jane, Jamie and Jan, we remember you all with fondness. Especially Jane who brightened up our Diane's days the year she spent in a hospital bed in our living room. I remember great conversations with your Mom...and also the JAG. I know you will miss her. Rest in peace, Jeanne.
