RED LION Joan Margaret (Shaffer) Plant of Red Lion, formerly of Hatfield, passed away peacefully at her home on June 11, 2013 at the age of 76. She was the beloved wife for 54 years of William J. Plant, a long term employee of FMC Corporation in Colmar and High Point Pennsylvania. She was born on September 11, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of the late James and Margaret (Feit) Shaffer. She grew up in Chicago and was a graduate of Calumet High School. After graduation she worked as an Administrative Assistant for Link Belt Corporation where she met her husband. Joan continued to work for Link Belt until starting a family. She then spent the remainder of her years raising her six children and pursuing her love of travel with her husband, Bill. The family moved to Hatfield in 1971 until retirement in 1995 brought Joan and Bill to Red Lion to enjoy their years together. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lansdale. Joan's memory is cherished by her survivors, her loving husband William, six children, William J. Plant, Jr. of King of Prussia, Ellen M. McCollum and husband Allan of Duncannon, Karen A. Baggett and husband David of Mt. Bethel, John S. Plant of West Chicago, Illinois, Joseph M. Plant and wife Louise of Swoyersville, Walter J. Plant of Conshohocken, six grandchildren, Christine, Daniel, Jamie, Benjamin, Alexandria, and Jessica, a brother, Edward Shaffer and wife Mildred of Sun City West, Arizona and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. There will be no viewing. Cremation will take place with Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 21st at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1000 W. Main Street, Lansdale, PA 19446. Family and friends are invited to extend their condolences from 10-11 a.m. with the service beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the , 1701 Beauregard Street, Alexandria, VA 22311. Joan's passion in life was her family. She enjoyed being a wife, mother, and grandmother. She always loved family gatherings and accepted all of life's challenges with grace and a sense of humor. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
