John Raborn Obituary

YORK John Davis Raborn Jr. died at Manor Care Kingston Court Wednesday, January 8, with Davis at his side. John was the son of the late Lavinia (Duplissy) and John Davis Raborn, Sr. of Baton Rouge, La. John is survived by his wife of 70 years, Gloria R. (Arata); his daughter, Gloria Jeanne Nickol; and son, John Davis and his wife Kathy (Myers); grandchildren, Mark Nickol, Laura (Nickol) Michaels (Tim), Tyler and Collin Raborn; great-granddaughters, Ellianah and Kambria Michaels. John and Gloria came to York in 1950, where John managed the shoe department at the Bon Ton in downtown York for Brown Shoe Company. After leaving the Bon Ton, he owned and operated the shoe department at Jack's. From Jack's, he moved a few stores down on West Market Street to open the Yorktowne Bootiere, which eventually moved to the Queensgate Shopping Center. When a customer came into the Yorktowne Bootiere, he or she was treated like family. John always had time to stop to talk to anyone, offer them some coffee served with a bit of southern hospitality. In fact, John never lost the subtle twang of his southern accent. John was born July 19, 1922, in Baton Rouge, La. and grew up in the area of Baton Rouge known as "Dixie" with his five brothers and a sister. John is preceded in death by his brothers, Dewey and Wiley; and his son-in-law, Lynn B. Nickol. He is survived by his sister, Marjorie and her husband Lon Sandifer; his brothers, Robert, Charles and his wife Adrian, and Bill and his wife Margie, and his brother Wiley's wife Alpha Mae (Demint). John served as Superintendent of York County roads for ten years in the '70s. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church, the Riverside Masonic Lodge, the Hawks Club, VFW, 13th Political Ward and the VA. John served in WWII as a pharmacists' mate with the Coast Guard. After his service, John attended LSU law school in Baton Rouge. One of John's greatest love was the farm he and Gloria purchased 50 years ago and named Clearwater Farm, aka "The Farm." John always planted a huge garden. He especially took pride in his tomatoes. John often sent a box of tomatoes to Baton Rouge to show off his crop. Of all that can be said of John, his greatest attribute was his honesty in all things. That tells you everything that one needs to know about him. To those of you who took the journey with John, especially the last two years, I thank you. For those of you who did not, you did indeed miss one hell of a ride! In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to make a donation to Heartland Hospice or a charity of your choice. A visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, January 18 at the John W. Keffer Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., 902 Mt. Rose Avenue, with the funeral beginning at 2 p.m. Internment will be at Roselawn Cemetery in Baton Rouge at the discretion of the family. My deepest sympathy to John's family. Although I only knew John for the last 18 months, I really enjoyed him. He was usually part of the ManorCare greeting committee when I visited my uncle. No matter what his mood, he always had a smile for me and some interesting conversation. Each night as he told me good night, his eyes twinkled like he had a secret. The nighttime welcome group... and I... will miss him very much. I hope your wonderful memories will bring you some comfort.

Johnny was one of my older brothers and I miss him so much. My mind is filled with memories about our boyhood years, especially during the great depression with its hard times. His famous "outhouse" at the entrance to his Clearwater Farm was his constant reminder to all of us of those years. Since he and I were both students at LSU Law School, I will surely miss our discussions about the law (and of course, politics). I will miss you, Johnny, all the remaining days of my life.
Your brother, Robert Lee Raborn (aka "Big Boy")

The Druck Valley Road that I knew and grew up on, will never be the same. The familiar faces and names are now gone. I remember my sister going down to John's farm many times and bringing up one of his horses to ride, especially the retired race horse, I think her name was Cindy. I will never forget the wonderful tribute John did at my father's funeral. Thank you John, it was great knowing you, and the many walks through the field back to your farm will always be a fond memory.

We moved to Druck Valley 10 years ago. Soon after we moved this little red pickup truck stopped to talk and there inside was this southern man and a little dear dog, Cassidy on his lap. I knew that day I would “love” this man. Mr Raborn, always brought me a smile. I would come home from work and find a care package at my door, tomatoes or maybe squash. I wanted to make REAL mint tea. “Come back and get some mint…it's all over the place”. My friendship with Mr Raborn grew and grew. We invited him and Mrs Raborn to our annual family Christmas parties, why? Because he was a part of our family. I would worry about him when I didn't see him for a while, and call to always hear the same answer. I'm fine, Gloria is fine too. I would visit him at Manor Care. What a joy that was…. He would make my day, with his kind and sometime words.
Scott took him to a few Masonic meeting… “strictly for ice cream and strawberries! “ Scott would always come home with a story or two. What a blessing for Scott.
Mr Raborn, I will miss you… I know that God took away the confusion and pain. I also know you're in Heaven with Blue, Cassidy, and Shep. Every time I drink my sweet tea I will remember you with great love.

I had a lot of good times on the farm. I remember the pool, the wood ties he used as a bridge to get back to the pond and the huge catfish I caught. John gave me my first real golf lesson that I still use to this day.

When they coined the phrase "Southern Gentleman" they were talking about John! Truely a man of many talents, God fearing and God praising, I take pride in calling him my friend. May he rest in peace and love.
