John Keating Obituary

SHREWSBURY John H. "Jeff" Keating, 74, died Thursday, September 1, 2011, at Rest Haven, York. He was the husband of Beverly D. (Bowden) Keating. A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, October 29, from Christ Lutheran Church, 105 S. Main St., Shrewsbury, with the Rev. Dione M. Klepetka and the Rev. Mark E. Fair officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment is private at the convenience of the family in Christ Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery. Born October 14, 1936, in Long Beach, Calif., John was the son of the late James H. Keating and late Bertha (Jewell) Alston. John graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in Annapolis, Md., and attended the University of Maryland where he played lacrosse and received a Bachelor Degree in Physical Education in 1958. He also received a Masters Degree from Pepperdine University, majoring in Guidance and Counseling. Serving 20 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, he retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Keating was employed in management with Westinghouse, Hunt Valley, Md., from 1982 until 1992. For many years he served as an official with PIAA in York County. His involvement included volleyball, basketball and softball. John was also the building inspector for Shrewsbury Borough for several years in addition to being a member of the former Shrewsbury Lion's Club and a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Shrewsbury, since 1982. In addition to his wife of 48 years, John is survived by a daughter, Gina K. Brockmeyer and her husband, Joseph of Shrewsbury; a son, Kevin B. Keating and his wife, Kathye of Lancaster; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a brother, James H. Keating, Jr. of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla. Mr. Keating was predeceased by a grandson, Alex Brockmeyer. The family will provide flowers and asks that memorial contributions be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 105 S. Main St., Shrewsbury, PA 17361. J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc. 24 N. Second St., New Freedom, is in charge of arrangements.
