WELLSVILLE Lois Ann Confer Downey, 83, entered the presence of God, on November 9, 2012, from LifeCare in Mechanicsburg, after a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Earle W. Downey, who preceded her in death in 1990. The couple shared 40 years of marriage and traveled together to 46 states. Born on September 21, 1929, in Zion, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Pearl (Reirch) Confer. Lois graduated from State College High School and the old West Side School of Nursing for practical nursing (now the Memorial Hospital) when they settled in York. She was employed by several nursing homes before stopping to care for her children Lois enjoyed reading her Bible and mentoring to many people in her life. She enjoyed many years at Emmanuel Baptist Church in York, then at Ambassadors Bible Church of Manchester. Lois volunteered many times to open her home to host college students and missionaries from other states. Mrs. Downey was a leader in the Girls Missionary Guild, assisted with many youth and children activities and also assisted with other needs in the church. She loved to see her family and visit her friends whenever possible. Her favorite times away from home were trips to her childhood town of Centre Hall and attending the Grange Fair. Being an avid reader, she loved auto biographies and learning about history. Lois enjoyed watching Penn State football games and horse races on T.V. Lois leaves to cherish her memory, a son, John A. Downey and wife, Sandra; two adored granddaughters, Megan Downey and Michelle Downey, all of Mechainsburg; a daughter, Jeanette M. Smith and husband, Keith, of Wellsville, along with two furry granddogs and a family cat; a brother, Philip Confer of Bellefonte; and a sister, Shirley Walker and husband Russell of Boalsburg. She was loved and adored by her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant sibling and a sister, Blanche Loudenslager, of Baltimore, Md. The viewing will be on Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Ambassadors Bible Chapel, 3000 York Haven Rd., Manchester. The service will begin at noon with Pastor David Slautterback officiating. Interment will follow in Manchester Union Cemetery. Gladfelter Funeral Home, Inc., is in entrusted with the arrangements.
