M. McDowell Obituary

McDowell STEWARTSTOWN M. Janelle McDowell, 82, died early Saturday morning, June 9, 2012, at the home of her son, David McDowell, overlooking her family farm. She was a lifelong resident of Stewartstown and was born on her family farm on Plank Road on August 19, 1929, the daughter of the late Vernon and Margaret Veach. Janelle was the wife of Norman G. McDowell, who died in 1989. She is survived by her children, Teresa Weigle and her husband, Rick of East Berlin, Dena Rugel and her husband, Gary of Columbia, Md., Rev. David McDowell, and Rev. Robert McDowell and his wife, Penny of Lancaster, Ohio; grandchildren, Jenni McDowell, Rebecca Tarbert, Kevin Tarbert, Naomi McDowell, and Nathaniel McDowell; and great-grandchild, Sarah Bell. She is also survived by her sister, Isabelle Wright of Pylesville, Md. The service will begin at 3 p.m. Monday, June 11, at the Stewartstown United Methodist Church, 26 S. Main St., officiated by her pastor, the Rev. Barry Robison. Burial will be in the Stewartstown Cemetery. Viewing will be 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter, 3544 N. Progress Ave., Ste. 205, Harrisburg, PA, 17110; or to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 15120, Chicago, IL, 60693. Janelle graduated from the American Beauty School of York and for several years was co-owner of a beauty shop in Stewartstown with her sister-in-law, Dorothy (McDowell) Sweitzer. She worked at AMP, Incorporated for 25 years as an inspector and retired in 1989. She was a faithful member of Stewartstown United Methodist Church and was active in the United Methodist Women, her Sunday School Class, and various ministries. Janelle was well known for her cooking and warm hospitality. Most of all, she was known for her vibrant faith in the Lord Jesus. The family would like to thank Janelle's many loving caregivers who during the past few years allowed her to live her last years on the family farm that she loved.

Mrs. McDowell always greeted me with a warm smile and welcoming words when I came to church. She was so kind and always said nice things about my son when he acolyted. She was a beautiful person inside and out. She will be missed. My sympathy to the McDowell family. May your happy memories of such a wonderful person bring you peace during this difficult time.

So many fond memories flood my mind of the years lived in Stewartstown. Janelle is active in those memories. I can see her sitting in the front rows to the left while the choir sang. She smiled with happy eyes. She was so devoted to her family. She was no stranger to anyone who was in need and totally a farm girl at heart. My condolences to the family...especially you David.
