YORK Richard "Dick" E. Metzler, 60, entered into rest on Sunday morning, May 20, 2012, at his home that he loved so much, with his wife, Sharon (Angle) Metzler, and their dog, Sara, at his side. He fought a 20 month courageous battle with pancreatic cancer with dignity and grace and with the help of his Faith, Family, and Friends. Dick and Sharon had a brief marriage of only four years, but a bond and love for a lifetime. Dick was born February 26, 1952, in Hanover. He was the son of the late Clarence B. (CB) and Dorothy (Goodhart) Metzler. Dick was a 1970 graduate of Hanover High School and attended York College. He previously worked as a store manager at The Bon Ton and Burlington Coat Factory stores. He entered the real estate field with Prudential Bob Yost in 1988 until 2011. He was a real estate agent, broker, and continuing education teacher. In 2001 he became Owner and President of North York Beverage. When he bought the business he said "he never worked another day of his life again because when you find something you love to do that much, it isn't work anymore." (Bob Yost quote.) His son, Carl, has been helping in the business for the last few years. Dick was an avid hunter. He loved being in the woods and Wyoming with his friends. When he sat in a tree stand with the help of his devoted friends he said he never felt sick. There was nothing wrong with him. He loved to fish in the streams, but liked to do it by himself to enjoy the peace and serenity of God's world that He had created. He was a country boy at heart. Dick was a member of St. Patrick Church, Izaak Walton League, NRA, Ducks Unlimited, Rooster Club, Hellam VFW, and Safari Club. Including his wife, Sharon, Dick is survived by his son, Carl Metzler and wife, BobbiJo; three grandchildren, Sarajane, Caleb B., and Olivia Metzler; his sister, Helen Shaffer and her husband, Richard (Dick) of Gettysburg; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dick had a special bond with his Yellow Lab, Sara, who was his angel sent from God for mommy and daddy both. He was preceded in death by siblings, John Metzler, Lois Nye, Paul Metzler, and LC "Red" Metzler. A viewing will be held 10 a.m. to 12 noon Tuesday, May 29, at St. Patrick Church, 231 S. Beaver St., York, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 12 noon. The Rev. Samuel Houser will be officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in Hanover. The John W. Keffer Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., 2114 W. Market St., York, is assisting with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, 1111 Stewart Ave., Bethpage, NY 11714; St. Patrick Education Fund, 231 S.
