William Linkous Obituary

William D. Linkous, 73, died Monday, October 4, 2004, at 6:27 a.m. at his home from ALS. He is the husband of Sara Anne (Etzweiler) Linkous. They were married 51 years on June 14. Born in Radford, Va. on March 14, 1931, he was the son of the late Douglas and Augusta (Tatum) Linkous. He was owner and CEO for 40 years of C.A. Herr, Inc. and more recently of C.A. Herr Antiques Annex both of Columbia. Bill was a graduate of Radford High School and attended V.P.I. and East Tennessee State. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving as a 1st Lt. in the U.S. Air Force. He was an active member and finance chairman of Columbia United Methodist Church. He was a member and secretary of Mount Bethel Cemetery Board of Directors, past chairman of the Columbia Hospital Board of Directors, member of the Advisory Board of Lancaster General Hospital, and past president and member of Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce. Bill was also a member of Old Public Grounds; Susquehanna Valley EMS Board; 11-11-11 Club; Columbia Historical Society; American Legion Post 372 of Columbia; Columbia Elks Lodge 1074; and life member of Red Rose V.F.W. Post 2435. He was a member of I.U. 13 Business Advisory Committee and past president of Columbia Merchants Association. He was a former board member of the Union National Community Bank and the Rotary Club of Columbia. He was a mentor with Millersville University Business Mentoring Program. Bill was very active in scouting. He was a former Council Commissioner for the LancasterLebanon Council Boy Scouts of America, where he received the Silver Beaver Award. He also was a member of the Throwing Bull Tribe of the scouts. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, William D. "Chip" Linkous, II of Columbia; a daughter, Wendy Sue Linkous Bertoli, wife of Brett of Lancaster; two grandchildren, Brandon and Brittany Bertoli; a sister, Judy Linkous Ruben of Radford, Va.; and a nephew, Happy Ruben of Radford, Va. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Columbia U.M. Church, Fifth and Walnut Streets, Columbia with the Rev. Jeffrey A. Snyder officiating. Interment will be held in Mount Bethel Cemetery, Columbia. Viewings will be held at the church Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Friday 10 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lancaster Co., 685 Good Drive, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604; or to ORCA, 610 N. Lime St., Lancaster, PA 17602; or to Columbia U.M. Church, 510 Walnut St., Columbia, PA 17512. Mrs. L., Wendy, Chip, Happy, Judy, Brittany, Brandon. You know how much Mr. L. meant to me as well as all of you. He had such an impact on my life, personally, professionally and spiritually.
