SHREWSBURY Elsie M. Markel, 93, died Monday, February 24, 2014, at Barbara J. Egan Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Shrewsbury. She was the wife of the late Oscar R. Markel. A viewing will be held from 12 to 2 p.m. Friday at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. A funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the mortuary with the Rev. Dr. Martha Butkofsky Boyer officiating. Interment will be in Joseph Giesey Memorial Cemetery, Shrewsbury. She was born September 23, 1920, in Codorus, a daughter of the late Henry J. and Bertha M. (Douglas) Cornbower. Elsie retired from the former AMP Plastics in Glen Rock. She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, and the former Happy Seniors, both in Shrewsbury. She enjoyed crafts, crossword puzzles, and in her earlier years, cooking, and camping with her husband. She loved her family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Elsie is survived by her children; Gwen K. Weinstein and her husband, Leroy of Manchester, Bonnie S. Wolf and her husband, Harry of Shrewsbury, and Randy H. Markel and his wife, Susann of Seven Valleys; five grandchildren, Frank and Matthew Weinstein, Michelle Sweitzer, Nevin Markel, and Courtney Hershey; and also eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Paul United Church of Christ, 161 S. Main St., Shrewsbury, PA 17361.
