YORK My sister and I want to share the celebration of the long life of our Mother, Mildred (Millie) Behrens. She died at York Hospital Monday, May 5,2014, one month short of her 97th birthday. She is survived by her daughters, Marjorie Franek and Judi Volkay, their husbands, Jerry and Jack, and grandchildren, Jeffrey Franek, Brian Volkay and wife, Tracey, Darren Volkay and wife, Sarah, and Mark Franek and wife, May Mon, and six great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, two brothers, and a sister. Millie was born in Pittsburgh, and enjoyed two teenage years in Russia with her family. She spent her married life in the Pittsburgh area. She lived in Hamilton, Mass., before moving to York. She enjoyed gardening and was President of her garden club. She was a champion Scrabble player and was mentally alert until her death. We always asked her "what are you reading now?" The past five years she enjoyed her independent living friends at the Elm Springs Residence. She was proud of her Czech heritage. Her favorite lab, Marley, always knew there were some cookies in her purse. Her 95th birthday was celebrated with family and friends who remembered all her happiest times. A private celebration of life ceremony will be held. Etzweiler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market St., York, is in charge of arrangements.
