Edwin Wilson Ailes Obituary
RED LION Edwin Wilson Ailes, 88, of York Township, entered into eternal rest on Friday, May 30, 2014, at Rest Haven-York. Born December 27, 1925, in Peach Bottom Township, he was a son of the late Edwin Hollingsworth Ailes and the late Pauline Cooper (Smith) Ailes of Delta. After attending Delta High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, serving his country during WWII in the Pacific theater of operations. He returned to civilian life in 1945 as a construction welder for Babcock Construction Company, spending time in New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Lancaster. Relocating to York County, his home once again, he married Grace Anna Wise on May 30, 1952. As the years continued, he and Grace had two daughters to whom he was a wonderful father. Over the years, "Ed" took jobs with A.B. Farquhar Company, Allis Chalmers Corporation, Borg Warner-York, and Formit Steel, from which he retired. Ed enjoyed the great outdoors, especially hunting, and taking his dogs for long walks in the later years. He was an avid trap and skeet shooter, as was his father, and belonged to the Isaac Walton League, and both Starview and Glen Rock Gun Clubs. Over the years, he won many trophies of which he was proud, and was the York County Champion shooter a number of times. Ed and his wife were charter members of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, where they continue their membership today. They enjoyed playing cards and spending time with family and friends. For 21 years, they regularly participated in water aerobics and fitness programs at the Jewish Community Center, where they enjoyed the socialization with many dear friends. He leaves his wife, Grace, of 62 years to the day, to cherish wonderful memories of family events, pets and activities. Ed is also survived by his daughters, Mary Jenette Dunlap, and her husband William C., of York, and Polly M. Rost, of York; two granddaughters, Jennifer Rebecca Dunlap and Erin Michelle Dunlap; two sisters, Mary Jane Williams, and Mildred Louise Stewart; two brothers, William John Ailes, Sr., and Joseph Francis Ailes, all of southern York County. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Isabel Helen Cline; and a son-in-law, James Christopher Braselman. A visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 S. George St., York. Private burial will be in Slateville Cemetery, near Delta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the York County SPCA, 3159 Susquehanna Trail North, York, PA 17406. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the diligent and compassionate care provided by the entire staff of Rest Haven-York to their beloved Ed.
