Gertrude E. Grymes Obituary
YORK Gertrude Ellanora Grymes (nee Nelson), formerly of Lewes, Del., and Baltimore, Md., died Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at Country Meadows at Leader Heights surrounded by and in the arms of her family. Born on March 6, 1924, Gertrude had a creative spirit which was evident in her sewing, baking, and artwork. Many family members were happy recipients of her quilts, wedding dresses, baby clothes, and artwork. She was a true romantic and enjoyed the films of the 1940's, particularly those that featured Errol Flynn. Her love for her husband was always first, but Errol Flynn captured her imagination and stole a piece of her heart. At age 8, she met the love of her life, "Wimpy" and they were together the rest of their lives. Together they camped, traveled the world, and lived for many years in their favorite placethe cabin on the Susquehanna River. A viewing will be held Monday, July 14, 2014, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 315 N. Constitution Ave., New Freedom, with the Rev. Anthony R. Dill officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Proud and fiercely loyal, Gertrude loved her family above all else. Gertrude was the wife of the late Winfrey L. Grymes, Sr., who died on June 14, 2013. The couple would have celebrated 71 years of marriage at the time of his death. She leaves her children to honor and cherish her memory, Winfrey L. Grymes, Jr. and his wife, Phyllis, JoAnne Grymes Melfa and her husband, Ronald, and Patricia Grymes Smith and her husband, Charles; four grandchildren, Ryan Grymes and his fiancee, Meghan Treherne, Lauren Melfa Catanzarite and her husband, Brian, Charles Smith, and Amanda Smith; and one great-grandson, Nicholas Jones. She is also survived by one brother, Joseph Nelson and his wife, Ida; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Baker. The family would like to acknowledge the compassion, dignity, and support offered to our mother by the staff and administration of Country Meadows at Leader Heights. Special thanks to Gentiva Hospice for their attention to details and support. The family suggest that any memorial contributions be sent to Country Meadows Coworkers Foundation, 830 Cherry Drive, Hershey, PA 17033. The family would also like to suggest that when Christmas comes this year, you may want to place a special ornament on your tree in memory of Gertrude. She loved Christmas and her holiday spirit will never be forgotten.
