SHREWSBURY Tom Simmons, 84, husband of the late Martha J. Simmons, died Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Pleasant Acres Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in York. A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. A funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Interment will be in Mt. Rose Cemetery in York. Tom was born August 21, 1929, in Glasgow, Ky., a son of the late James and Bertha (Peden) Simmons. He retired in 1978 after 30 years as a supervisor with Caterpillar. He was a member and former elder of Glen Rock Church of Christ, where he and his wife Martha were active in various church ministries. Tom loved the outdoors, especially when he went hunting and fishing with his sons and friends. He is survived by his sons, Thomas Alan Simmons and his wife Alice and J. David Simmons and his wife Sheila, both of Glen Rock; five granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; and seven great-grandsons. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Tom's name may be made to Glen Rock Church of Christ, 3899 Sticks Road, Glen Rock, PA 17327; or the , 3544 N. Progress Avenue, Suite 205, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
