HAMETOWN M. Jeannette Harvey, 97, died August 5, 2014, at her home. She was the wife of the late James R. Harvey. There will be a viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, August 11, 2014, from the J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc. 24 N. Second St., New Freedom, and also from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday from the mortuary. The service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the mortuary with the Rev. Gerald R. Mapstone, officiating. Burial will be in christ Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Shrewsbury. She was born September 7, 1916, in Carbondale, Lackawanna County, PA, a daughter of the late D. Victor and Carrie A. (Rehmeyer) Shank. Jeannette was a 1932 graduate from the former New Freedom High School. She earned her teaching certificate from Shippensburg State Teachers College in 1934. Jeannette was an elementary school teacher for 36 years, teaching for 10 years in one-room schools throughout Shrewsbury Township. She then taught at the former New Freedom Elementary School and also the Southern School District Elementary School, retiring in 1974. Jeannette was active in the American Field Service for over 20 years and served as a host parent. She was a founder and director of the former Hametown Christian School, now known as the Shrewsbury Christian Academy. She was a member of the Glenview Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and a member of its Autumn Pioneers. She was formerly a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Hametown and a member of its Church Council, Altar Guild, LCW, was a director of its School of Religion and Bible School for 24 years, and taught Sunday School for 40 years. Jeannette was a member of the Triangle Chapter #483 OES of Shrewsbury, and also of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Beta Beta Chapter. Jeannette was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening. She and her late husband James traveled across the United States, Europe and South America. She is survived by a daughter, Lois J. Stoner of York; a son, James R. "Jay" Harvey, Jr. and his wife Mary Ann of Seven Valleys; an adopted son, Pedro Febres and his wife Joan of York; 10 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Jeannette was preceded in death by a sister, L. Kathryn Chambers.
