YORK Steven L. Smallwood, 54, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 22, 2014. He was the long-time companion of Mary LaRochelle. He also leaves behind his sister, Deb Goodling-Kime and her husband, Rodney Kime; two nieces, Abby and Becky Goodling; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Robert and Helen Smallwood. Steve graduated from York Vo-Tech in 1978 and also attended West York High School. He was very talented as a small engine mechanic. He worked for over 30 years at New York Wire Company in the maintenance department, working on machines and equipment in the local plants. Steve was a very sensitive and caring individual. He always helped out his neighbors and family doing yard work, shoveling snow, and repairing tractors, snow blowers, and other equipment. He and Mary loved animals and shared a passion for birds, dogs, cats, and any type of creature. Animals were naturally attracted to his gentle nature. Steve rejuvenated and collected Wheel Horse lawn tractors and enjoyed going to events where he could see them in races or tractor pulls. He also enjoyed restoring muscle cars, fishing, and riding bikes.
