George E. Deavers Obituary
RED LION George E. Deavers, 89, died Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at his home. He was the husband of Lois L. (Bailey) Deavers. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Geiple Funeral Home, Inc., 53 Main St., Glen Rock, with Pastor Troy R. Harrold officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Glen Rock, with military rites by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Mr. Deavers was born on March 1, 1922, in Littlestown, a son of the late John E. and Clara (McGuiness) Deavers. He graduated from York High School in 1940 and was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving as a Sergeant with the 33rd Coast Artillery Battalion in the South Pacific. He retired in 2010 as a Sales Person for Penn Waste, York, and prior to that was employed with York Waste for many years. He had also worked in the Propane Sales Dept. for Smith Village in Jacobus for many years. He attended Christ United Methodist Church, Yoe, and was a member of the VFW Post 7012, New Freedom, the American Legion Post #543, Red Lion, and was a life member of the Girard AA, York. One of George's passions in life was golfing, and he enjoyed playing until last year, mostly at the Red Lion C.C. and Springwood Golf Course. In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter, Susan Hogan and her husband, Donald of Columbia, S.C.; a stepson, Donald L. Redding, Jr. of Red Lion; four grandchildren, Kristen, Katherine, Benjamin, and Amanda Hogan; two stepgrandsons, Dustin and Dylan Redding; two sisters, Catherine Billiar of Sunset Beach, N.C., and Betty Wickard and her husband, Walter of York Haven; a brother, Leonard Deavers and his wife, Mary Ellen of Winterstown; and his beloved cat, Ginger. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Christ United Methodist Church, 81 N. Main St., Yoe, PA 17313; or to VNA/Hospice, c/o York Health Foundation, 912 S. George St., York, PA 17403.
